Introduction

As many of you know, in the technological era we are living in, there are many new inventions and useful creations being tested and built all around the world. One of them, is Brain-Computer Interface, also known as, BCI. This isn’t a very recent invention, it was created a while back. However, it has recently caught the eye of the public and people are starting to create useful and very innovative machinery with it.

What is a Brain-Computer Interface?

Brain-Computer Interface is a way to read brain signals and put those signals in use to control a computer non-invasively. Well… that was the original thought and idea. However, now the idea is different. Now, we have found ways to read brain signals and put them in use to control different devices, machines, lights, and prosthetics! You could just think, and you could switch on a light! That is INSANE! So in very simple terms, a Brain-Computer Interface is, Brain-Computer Interface is a piece of technology that lets you communicate between the brain of humans or animals and a separate technology, it takes signals from the brain and puts it in an external piece of hardware.

What Can It Be Used For?

Brain-Computer Interface can be used for many, many, things like, controlling: lights, cars, appliances, prosthetics, drones, and much more. Scientists have developed a Brain-Computer Interface controlled prosthetic limbs and helping paralyzed people walk and move again. As a matter of fact, it has already worked, and they are distributing to people now. People are also doing Brain-Computer Interface with Virtual Reality and being able to control the environment in Virtual Reality without using remote controls. People have also developed a way to control lights by just thinking. There are many more projects that people have been working on and this is just the beginning of the revolution that Brain-Computer Interface will bring to the world.

How Does It Work?

Brain-Computer Interface works two ways, invasive, and non-invasive. invasive, is more accurate, but takes longer to process. While non-invasive, is less accurate, but very fast in giving results. Usually, the most common device used for Brain-Computer Interface, is EEG (non-invasive) cap. It is a cap that has sensors that rest on your scalp and read your brainwaves. it then sends the data to a computer, which then translates it into a specific category and produces an outcome. If you are very focused, the EEG will pick that up and if you have connected it to an Arduino, you can control any object! The level of focus required to move race car can be adjusted on your preference but then when you focus, the car will move!

Summary

Brain-Computer Interface works in incredible ways and does incredible things, you can really change peoples lives with it, or build something really cool. And as much as the world is changing, the things around us as we know them, might not exist in a few decades. So stay open to new technologies and explore them while you can. Thank you for reading this article. I hope you enjoyed learning a bit about Brain-Computer Interface and how it’s rolling out these days.
